Some of us are early birds, where others are night owls. How we function during the day, and the type of sleep we prefer, depends greatly on the type of work we do as well as other responsibilities. When it comes to training and gaining the most from our efforts, should you be getting up early and lacing up your trainers, or should you wait until evening to pump it out at the gym?

The answer might actually surprise you, because there are distinct advantages to both, depending on the type of exercise you are planning to do. Different studies have indicated that cardio training is most effective at burning calories when done first thing in the morning, however, when it comes to resistance training, your anaerobic capacity is higher during the evening time.

Sore muscles are something that most exercise enthusiasts will experience, whether it’s from starting a new style of exercise or simply pushing yourself really hard, muscle soreness is often the by-product of stressing your muscle fibres to initiate growth and development. I’ve always found that there is something slightly satisfying about having a little DOM’s (delayed onset muscle soreness) after a particularly gruelling training session. It lets you know that you have challenged yourself and that your muscles are working to adjust and adapt, becoming stronger and more resilient than before.

It is true that sugar can get you addicted! It produces the same effects on the brain such as drugs like cocaine or heroin. Scary, right? White sugar is chemically formulated to make us love the taste and then keep us coming back for more. This is why we do not think twice about saying no to a birthday party or stopping by that bakery on the way to work that smells oh so good!

Think about it. When you taste the cake, donuts, ice cream, whatever sweets you may choose- it sends these signals to your brain that makes you feel so happy and energetic inside (endorphins)! Let’s say you drink one soda. After an hour or so, you tend to feel worse than you did before drinking the soda. So, what do you do? You reach for another soda for that energy and happiness again. Crash. Repeat.
